2021: A year to remember for Katapult

In a year which has seen us celebrate the company’s 20th Birthday, we’ve taken a look back over the last 12 months of projects, industry expos and award wins. It’s been busy, exciting and full of pride at our achievements!

Our projects

LEGO® DOTS Festival Experience

LEGO® Rebuild The World

The Terrace

Roarr! Dinosaur Adventure

Portmagee Whiskey Experience

Working in collaboration with The LEGO® Group and Merlin Entertainments, we designed and rolled-out two new activations globally in LEGOLAND® Parks and LEGOLAND® Discovery Centres. Rebuild The World was a new experience at 8 parks worldwide, where guests are able to take part in an immersive build experience as they are encouraged to build, unbuild and rebuild the theme park of their dreams.

At 11 LEGOLAND® Discovery Centres worldwide, we designed and produced an engaging experience that captures the crafty and expressive nature of LEGO DOTS – featuring a DOTS cart, campervan, spinning festival letters, decor and activities.

Industry events

As international travel opened up once more, we were first on the plane to meet colleagues, clients and industry colleagues in-person. As well as exhibiting at Saudi Entertainment and Amusement Expo and IAAPA Europe in Barcelona, we also visited IAAPA Expo in Orlando and the Brand Licensing Expo in London, UK. We also virtually attended MAPIC/Leisurup.

Exciting announcements

Ferrari

Al Hokair

TORCHLIGHT

London Resort

We were announced as one of the first businesses to be chosen by The London Resort, to help create the UK’s first, next generation theme park. The news followed our agreement to work with Al Hokair Group in the Middle East to help create future themed attractions.

IAAPA Orlando saw the launch of a unique Ferrari media based midway attraction concept, created in collaboration with Simworx. The Ferrari Experience concept features immersive simulator rides, an esports adrenalin hub and exclusive themed dining experiences for all the family to enjoy. 2021 also saw the unveiling of more details about our psychological dark ride concept, TORCHLIGHT.

Winning awards

We were delighted to be awarded for our work on the Derby Market Place project – an alfesco dining experience in the city centre of our hometown, that helped support the local hospitality industry. As well as winning the Putting Derbyshire on The Map award from Mainframe, we also won Excellence in Collaboration award at the East Midlands Chamber Business Awards. We won the awards alongside our fantastic partners, Derby City Council, Marketing Derby, Phi Advisory and Derby LIVE.

Inspiring the next generation

At a time where 95% of school children globally were learning from home, we decided to create an additional resource to add fun for kids, and give teachers and parents a respite. We launched the Become A Theme Park Designer activity book and competition, allowing children to learn fundamental skills in context of a theme park.

After 5,000+ downloads and hundreds of entries, we crowned Ethan our winner for his Volcano of Doom rollercoaster ride concept. As a thank you for their ideas, our design team brought their drawings to life even more and created a children-designed theme park, Magnificent Manor.

Our plans for 2022

We have exciting plans and projects in the pipeline for 2022.
