Findern School Playground

Findern School Playground

Helping Hands Project

For our Helping Hands project 2020 we were proud to work with a local primary school in our home city of Derby, UK, to create a unique and multi-sensory playground for pupils, parents and teachers to enjoy together.

Since its inception in 2018, the Helping Hands initiative has supported charities in helping to create new experiences – providing strategy and insights, concept development, design and executive production expertise for free.

“We are incredibly proud of our re-imagined play area and we cannot wait to see our pupils enjoy it everyday too. The playground now has an abundance of fun and gives the children a space to be more creative, curious and compassionate to the natural world.”

PAULA FOX, HEAD TEACHER - FINDERN PRIMARY SCHOOL

THE BRIEF

The Playground’s main goal was to provide a fun and interactive outdoor experience that would support the development of motor-skills, communication and connection to nature, within a safe environment. ‘Free play’ areas were also required, to provide preschoolers and Key Stage One pupils with the space to unlock their creativity.

We started by assessing the current playground layout and splitting it into six key areas within the new masterplan. These individual areas would be earmarked to help meet the brief for a multi-sensory experience. The areas we identified were:

  • Active Play – Physical challenges to get children moving
  • Sensory Play – Stimulating curiosity with the sights, sounds and textures of nature
  • Reading Area – Relaxed, comfortable and quieter space to enjoy a book
  • Imagination – Stimulating creative space with colour and space to make
  • Multi Use – Colourful and open tarmac area for running games
  • Hideaway – Tranquil space for friend groups to connect and communicate

CONCEPT & DESIGN

Following initial masterplanning and concepts of the playground, we then created 3D visuals to bring our designs to life. These designs featured some of the existing experiences already within the playground, such as the herb and vegetable gardens, and also included new installations too. The climbing frame was one of the new installations which we worked alongside the school and play equipment supplier to ensure it was the most suitable design for the pupils.

New floor marking designs were also proposed to bring together the areas of the playground and create a more vibrant atmosphere in all weather conditions.

EXECUTIVE PRODUCTION

As part of the project, we also provided executive production to complete the project to the high quality and safety standards required by the school.

We initially liaised with suppliers and play equipment vendors to execute the design, material and finishes as prescribed in our concept drawings and 3D models. Upon installation, we also provided on-site art direction and project management on an ongoing basis until the playground was completed.
