Katapult transforms city centre Market Place

Katapult have worked with Derby City Council and other partners to create a vibrant 330-person capacity ‘meeting and eating’ space where people will be able to consume food purchased from local restaurants.

The al fresco dining experience in Derby Market Place features bookable chalets, outdoor tables and a performance area – local street artists will bring colour, vibrancy and a unique style to the experience too. It is lit at night, have its own toilet facilities and be laid out in accordance with social distancing guidelines.

Following the impact of Covid-19, the Derby Economic Recovery Task Force, made up of representatives from both public and private sectors, formed to lead and drive forward Derby’s economic recovery from the effects of the coronavirus crisis.

One key development was the opening of a outdoor dining experience to support local restaurants, cafes and cultural organisations. CEO and Co-owner of Katapult, Dawn Foote said:

“As a business located in the city, we are both proud and delighted to develop a experience that will support Derby’s hospitality industry through this challenging period.”

“The Market Place in Derby has been underused for many years and we are delighted to kick-start it’s regeneration by creating this outdoor dining experience – something we know the people of Derby are crying out for. We’re looking forward to people returning to the city centre with confidence, to experience this new, Covid-secure, destination in the heart of the city.”

“We worked on the overall concept design and theming to help relaunch Derby Market Place a destination with a sense of excitement and clear brand identity. We have used bold graphics, vibrant colours and an informal tone of voice – to encourage people to have confidence in returning to the city centre.”

The brand will be rolled out into promotional material, social media content, as well as the outdoor dining experience’s look and feel.

Katapult has also helped to shape the guest experience, working with partners to ensure safety and enjoyment are core priorities. Guests will be able to book a table, or walk-up to the experience, order food from a participating local restaurant on their phone, and enjoy eating with friends and family once it arrives.

The initiative has received a massive welcome from businesses in the hospitality sector. Annie, from Annie’s Burger Shack said:

“The more a city has to offer the better it is for both visitors and businesses alike. It gives people the impetus to come out, and Derby offers all that and more. I love this city. The more diversity, the better reason to come out and try new things and new places.”

Craig Bunting, Co-found and Marketing Director at BEAR added:

“We’re excited to be part of a number of business to bring Derby City Council’s vision for The Market Place Dining Experience to life. Anything that promotes this part of the city and supports businesses, by driving footfall is always welcome. Delivered well, I believe the experience will add a great atmosphere to the area.”

Derby Market Place was opened on Saturday 25th July and more details can be found at: http://derbymarketplace.co.uk/.
